Gambling with Laptop Security

I'm now blogging at Ponemon.org in my capacity there as senior privacy analyst. My observations on two recent studies related to laptop computer security are the focus of my first post there.

Rather than simply cut-and-paste the entire post, here's the highlight:

In the first study we found that 49% of those surved believed the the cost of the laptop computer itself was of equal or greater value than the information held by the laptop computer.

According to our second study, the average replacement cost of a lost laptop computer was $1,500. The average total cost as a result of the loss of a laptop computer was just under $50,000.

How many breaches must occur due to the loss of a laptop computer before this simple message gets through to the business community?
